Behavioural interviews: doing STAR well, not just knowing the acronym
Everyone's heard of STAR. Almost nobody uses it to tell a story an interviewer actually remembers an hour later, usually because the Result gets rushed.
STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) is a structure for telling a work story clearly. Most people know the acronym but still get it backwards: they spend most of their time on Situation and Task, and rush through Result, the one part that actually proves they're good at the job.
🎯 Explain Like I'm Hired Ending an answer with "...I debugged the pipeline" and stopping there leaves out the part that actually matters. Example: compare that to ending with "...which cut the dashboard's data discrepancy from 8% to under 0.5%, and I added an automated check so it couldn't silently happen again." The second version proves real impact and shows judgment beyond just the immediate fix. Same story, far stronger ending.
